Deadline Nearing for Entering Trophies in 28th Awards Period

Attention big-game hunters: December 31, 2012, is the deadline for entering your trophies into Boone and Crockett records, if you’d like to be included in the Club’s 28^th triennial Big Game Awards book, banquet, exhibit and conservation data.

The Boone and Crockett scoring and records-keeping program was the first-ever data collection system designed to measure and evaluate the population health and habitat quality of native North American big-game species. This historic info has been used for decades to improve state and federal wildlife polices and management strategies.

Trophy entry materials (official score chart, entry form and affidavit, and photos) postmarked by December 31 will be processed for the next Boone and Crockett records book. The triennial publication will list trophies accepted in 2010, 2011 and 2012, and is slated for release in October 2013.

Of all the trophies entered during those three years, the Top 5 specimens in each of 36 categories of native North American big game will be invited to a special awards banquet, exhibit and other events July 17-20, 2013, in Reno, Nevada. The Boone and Crockett Club 28^th Big Game Awards Program will be held at the Silver Legacy Resort and Casino, where an exhibit of these high-ranking trophies will be open for public display.

The abundance of outstanding big game trophies today is cause for celebration.

Big game trophies mean different things to different people, which is one reason why they are so special and coveted. “A trophy is in the eye of the beholder” is the most common expression used to describe this diversity of opinion. There is one aspect of trophy however, that is largely overlooked today that makes them most special. A trophy represents the fact that our game management and hunter-supported conservation programs are working.

Every three years, dating back to 1971, the Boone and Crockett Club has united the big game hunting community in celebration of our systems of conservation and big game management, the fair chase sportsmen that support these programs, and the trophies that are the results.

If these programs were not working mature, male specimens would only be a thing of the past. Instead, trophies do live today and in greater numbers than at anytime in history.

Worlds Records Among Trophies to be Exhibited in Reno

A triennial celebration of conservation and hunting is set for July 17-20, 2013, at the Silver Legacy Hotel in Reno, Nev. Hosted by the Boone and Crockett Club, the event includes a public exhibition of new World’s Records and other extraordinary big game trophies from across North America.

On exhibit will be displays of Top 5 trophies taken during the past three years, along with Boone and Crockett-class trophies taken by hunters age 16 and under, in 36 categories of native North American big game, plus a variety of seminars and exhibits.

Registered attendees also can enjoy raffles, an auction featuring hunts in top trophy regions across the continent and evening awards banquets and presentations.

“Boone and Crockett Club began keeping records in 1906 as a way of detailing species once headed for extinction. Now these records are an ongoing celebration of the conservation work that brought those species back from the brink—and keeps them abundant today,” said Eldon Buckner, chairman of the Club’s Records of North American Big Game Committee.

Science-based conservation efforts led and funded by license-buying hunters continue to underwrite most wildlife conservation and management programs in the U.S.

Boone and Crockett Club began hosting public exhibitions of big game trophies in 1947.

“People have always enjoyed seeing and appreciating the trophies that we honor as symbols of the world’s most successful model for conservation,” said Buckner. “The fact that the majority of these trophies we taken in recent times supports the fact that this system is still working.”
